Speed Cap?

Is a member of TalkTalk staff able to whether or not the DLM is capping my downstream sync speed at 35Mbps?

It seems to have been at a rather suspicious value of around 34.99 for a little while now with a SNR margin of 8dB.

Don't do that. The forum is here to help everybody. Just don't cast aspersions at others and try to be nice.  🙂

I am truly sorry you feel that way. Like I said, I really don't want to fight with anyone, and as this is continuing to make me more and more angry and stressed, I think the one one thing we can agree on is that it would be best to end this thread now since my issue here has been resolved by TalkTalk staff. I will think very carefully about asking for help on the forum in the future.

My "condescending attitude" was entirely a figment of your imagination and I take issue with that. Best not to post at all rather than to try to justify your own hang ups further.

Firstly, I'd like to apologise for the late reply. I've been away for a while, not been on the forum and didn't see any notifications.

I very much don't and never have wanted a fight with anyone, so I do want to apologise for my previous post which you felt was "malevolent".

I was very upset by your condescending attitude in previous posts mocking me for the way I decide to operate my broadband modem/router (and other household appliances), and I let that anger get the better of me, which was wrong. I will endeavour to think much more carefully in future before posting anything on this forum.

That's not an apology. What you "felt" is clearly something only you can reflect on.

I never set out to offend anyone and I am sorry if you were offended by what I posted. It was not intended to be "malevolent". It was a response to your previous posts to me which felt rather condescending and appeared to be mocking me for my decisions on how I wished to operate my router.

To be honest I don't much care for your reasons after such a malevolent post to me. No thoughts on an apology?

So far still connecting at just over 39Mbps as expected.

I completely understand that there is an advantage to leaving the router permanently on and connected with regards to avoiding any undue DLM line profile restrictions, but there are other reasons why I choose not to do this.

Goodness, that's you, not me. What a horrible accusation.

Well, like I said, @ferguson , until this recent incident, switching off/on once per day never triggered the DLM to take action, so hopefully it will remain stable.

Once again though, I find it difficult to read the tone of your comments, and it kind of feels like you are trying to imply that you want the DLM to reduce my speed profile again, as if you derive some sort of perverse pleasure from seeing people suffer.

See how it goes if you keep switching the router off every night.

Thanks, @Karl-TalkTalk , great job.

Connected tonight with a downstream sync speed over 39Mbps and 6dB SNR margin.

Exactly the result I was hoping for.

If only you had picked up the thread initially, we could have saved a couple of pages worth of nonsense.

Hi

I'll ask Openreach to reset your DLM profile and see if this helps.

Thanks

Karl.

Thanks for your reply @Chris-TalkTalk

I've connected up a landline phone and there doesn't appear to be any audible noise on the line. Router stats also show no errored seconds in last 18 hours since last power on at time of writing so I'm guessing whatever event triggered the DLM to take action was an isolated incident.

Hi AllyM,

I can confirm that your sync speed is being capped at 35Mbps by the line profile set by DLM. Are you experiencing any problems with your telephone service, any noise on the line?

It is kind of underperforming (slightly) in the sense that I know the line is capable of a little bit more speed, but I don't recall ever saying that I was raising a "complaint", I have stated many times that was simply trying to ask a question.

OK. Have a happy life as you are, we all do our own thing. Just don't complain if your broadband isn't even actually underperforming.  🙂

It an overall risk assessment @ferguson

While the router will only use a small amount of power and the fire risk is low, weighed up against no obvious benefit to having it powered on when nobody is using it, I don't see the point in taking the (admittedly low) risk.

With a fridge, on the other hand, I would consider the risk of food poisoning is greater than the risk of fire so it stays on.

At the risk of going off on a tangent, but you did give the (I think rather odd) example:

Microwave gets switched on when needed to heat food and switched off afterwards, as does the cooker/oven and most other appliances. The Microwave clock never gets set because I've never even considered the need to have a clock on a microwave (or a cooker which doesn't have a clock anyway)

Why not add the router to the obvious exceptions? Is it more or less likely to spontaneously burst into flames than your alarm system, doorbell, fridge, freezer etc? Do you reset your microwave and oven clocks every day? I am all for safety and energy conservation, but sometimes?

Well, if you switch it on and off regularly then there's your answer.

Like I said, switching off/on most days for many years has never triggered DLM action in the past so I don't think that's the answer

Maybe try leaving it on for a while and see if DLM starts to look kindly on your connection?

Yes, that is a logical suggestion. I had thought of that but it is difficult for me to implement as I am not comfortable leaving electrical equipment powered on when I am not at home (with a few obvious exceptions), even if the risk of any potential disaster is low.
