Unsecure Connection

Hi

I keep getting warning message "unsecured connection" do not enter sensitive information such as passwords & credit cards on this site it could be stolen.

I recently had a new router which I thought would eliminate this issue but still getting same message.

It shows WPA/WPA2- PERSONNEL I have gone into settings on router but cant change this.

I have changed the name of router.

I have a new phone so not using old equipment etc.

Though I have additional security on all my devices this is causing me some concern.

Is there an easy way to fix this issue thats not too technical.

Hi there. Thank you for confirming this @ferguson .

These are overweening messages. You will never get "secure" access to your router IP address, simple as that.

Hi

My mobile Samsung which is new.

cant use any other device as my security blocks access as "dangerous"

I cant link my printer (new) either because  I get the same message.

Prior to getting new router this started happening with old router which I had for years.

I understand, can you confirm which device you are using to complete the settings?

Hi

I have tried to follow your instructions but it doesn't let me change security settings.

I can see its set WPA2 personnel but cant confirm anything else.

Basically cant change any security settings at all.

Hi @absfab54 thank you for getting back to us, you can use the steps below.

Open your browser and type in 192.168.1.1 (default address, modify if changed)
2.    Login by entering the Username: admin and Password: On the label on the back of your router

Set Security to WPA2 Personal, this must also set the encryption to AES as no separate option for this)
Dashboard > See Wi-Fi Settings > Manage Advanced Settings > Wi-Fi 2.4Ghz gear icon > Basic
Dashboard > See Wi-Fi Settings > Manage Advanced Settings > Wi-Fi 5Ghz gear icon > Basic.

If you’ve tried these steps and are still having issues, kindly let me know and we will look further into this for you. Thanks

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have followed all the information you have provided.

This message occurs when I am trying to access the router to change router settings?

Hi @absfab54, thank you for reaching out to us regarding the "unsecured connection" warning message you're experiencing. I understand how concerning this can be, especially when it comes to online security. Let’s work together to address this issue.

The "unsecured connection" message typically appears when you are trying to access a website that does not use HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure). This means that the connection to that website is not encrypted, which can put your sensitive information at risk. It’s good to hear that you have a new router. The WPA/WPA2-Personal setting is a standard security protocol for Wi-Fi networks, and it is generally secure. However, if you are still seeing the warning, it may not be related to your router settings.

Steps to Address the Issue:

  • Check the Website: First, ensure that the website you are trying to access is secure. Look for "https://" at the beginning of the URL. If it starts with "http://" only, it means the site is not secure. If you have to enter sensitive information, it’s best to avoid that site or contact the website's support for clarification.
  • Clear Browser Cache: Sometimes, clearing your browser's cache can help resolve issues. You can do this by going into your browser settings and finding the option to clear browsing data.
  • Update Your Browser: Ensure that your web browser is up to date. An outdated browser may not properly recognize secure connections.
  • Use a Different Browser: If the issue persists, try accessing the website using a different web browser to see if the warning still appears.
  • Check Device Security Settings: Since you mentioned you have additional security on your devices, ensure that any security software or settings are not overly restrictive, which could be causing the warning.

If you’ve tried these steps and are still having issues, please let us know, and we can assist you further. Your online security is important to us, and we want to ensure you feel safe while browsing. Thank you for your patience, and we look forward to helping you resolve this!

If it appears only when you are trying to access your router then it can be ignored. The router address will be http, not https. There is no reason for it to be secure as it is not an external site.

Hi

Its nothing to do with accessing any website other than the IP address before I can even get into the router settings.

Thanks for your help but I am now going to leave this to Talktalk.  IT staff  to resolve now and best not to be discussing this on this site

Hi @absfab54 the team are on long weekend at the moment.

Sorry if this has been asked before but

What browser are you using?

Have you an example of a website you are trying to reach, or is only when you try to access your router that the warning appears?

I don't work here and all my opinions are my own.

I have still got this issue and dont seem to be getting anywhere with this.

Its the IP address that states its insecure before I even log in to router.

It seems as though I am using the correct security settings on router.

I can only check this on my mobile which is new.

Hey @Divsec

No worries, but no idea without more detail. I was picking out the single issue of WiFi security settings on the router.

Hi @ferguson , sorry to barge in, is this possibly a http v Https issue?

The op hasn't mentioned what he is trying to access? Could be a club or similar not too well painted. Or maintained website.

I don't understand why you have been unable to change the WiFi security settings? You should select WPA2 Personal/AES from the dropdown menu and then make sure to click the Apply button.

Hi

No this problem came to my attention when I had the old router as well.

That is why I decided to request a new router as I had the old router for years and thought outdated security settings was the cause.

Thank you for your response, we will send you a private message so that we can have this discussed further with you. You have mentioned this only started to happen with the new router, but you have never had this problem before, is that correct?

Just to clarify I meant the old router " I had for years" not this security issue.

Hi

Not issues exactly but the previous router lights were constantly flashing all the while when in use also the security issue was the same when using previous router. which I had for years .

I did think by having a new router would resolve the security issue but unfortunately it hasn't. Still same message "don't enter sensitive info such as passwords or credit cards on this site as it could be stolen"

I need this problem to be escalated because I am now very reluctant to use Wi-Fi at all. Even considering changing Broadband provider.

I have checked the WIFI settings while using this now and it states IPV4 DNS Servers (unencrypted)
