Odd 'loss' of emails this afternoon

I use POP3 into Outlook on the desktop PC most days, but if I am going out and want to see any incoming emails, I close Outlook and instead rely on my iPhone (with IMAP).

When I then return to my desktop PC and restart Outlook, Outlook grabs and POP3 downloads those new emails (meaning my iPhone now does not show them as they have been grabbed from TalkTalk's server)

Today I noticed an odd thing - as I was out and about with my iPhone, I clicked on Email and duly noted a few emails coming down, but did not read them at that point. A bit later, I went back to the Email app only to find those Pipex emails were no longer there. I assumed that maybe I had not fully closed down Outlook on the desktop PC, and that that had grabbed the emails.

But when I got back to the PC, Outlook was not open... and those emails did not come down from the Pipex server either.

Is it possible that, due to testing etc. with the switch to a new email provider, some accident could have happened?

Thanks

I believe there is a 10gb total limit.

Hi, thanks again.

Just checked size of that Outlook Inbox (I have more...) and it is 4.5gb (understandable after all those years)  - is that handle-able by e.g. a fairly recent iPhone?? Actually the weak link might be the Outlook app itself :o(

Thunderbird - well since Microsoft kindly announced that they were going to force Outlook 'Classic' users to store their emails in the Cloud - presumably to hoover their contents into Msft's lap for AI purposes, not to mention State snooping - I have been considering alternatives.

The problem for me is that I've used Outlook since it came out, even the more odd bits like Journal, and as a Swiss Army Knife kind of tool for daily actvity and emails it is pretty hard to beat.

You could probably achieve this with imap and create a folder for your old mails and drag this into your email account which would then replicate across to your phone too.

Before changing to imap, if you do, make sure youve backed up your old mails and then import them.

Might sound daunting, but it may save you losing emails going forward.

Only a suggestion as you know what works best for you.

Or try maybe setting up Thunderbird on your PC first as imap, then import your old emails and if that works convert Outlook to imap and your folders will replicate across.

Hi, thanks for the reply - I've been bitten before when changeovers happen, when companies reassured me that the testing was done away from live data, but then it transpired some devs had decided it was save to test on live stuff...

Mix of POP and IMAP - I'm a bit rusty on this, but in my head the reason was to ensure that I never got into a pickle whereby I ended with some emails downloaded safely to my local PC and Outlook (POP3) but some downloaded to other devices i.e. the overall email mountain was not split (I do a lot of searching acros 20 years of emails on the desktop - 60,000 emails + by now).

Happy to go with any suggestions, though I'm sure that IMAP on my phone would not allow me to e.g. search across all my 60k+ emails (in Outlook they are Windows Search indexed, so that means that if I am asked about something that happened 10 years ago, the results come back in under 1 second).

Cheers

Any testing is done in a test, bit live environment, so unlikely.

Is there a reason you are using a mixture of pop and IMAP? If you use IMAP across all platforms there is less chance of losing an email and when out and about, you will have access to all emails.

I personally use IMAP across 3 devices (phone, PC and laptop) and as I have a number of e-tickets for shows, travel etc, it means they are always on my phone.

Maybe worth considering.

As to missing emails, unless they are in your spam folder or bin, I'm afraid they are lost.
