Over aggressive spam filtering, sending simple plain text emails to spam folder

Hi,

I'm having issues with my TalkTalk email where emails from myself/other TalkTalk users and some external users are consistently going to my Spam folder, even when they're plain text.(even just a few words!)

This affects mail sent from TalkTalk addresses to my TalkTalk address, including from Webmail.

I never know of the emails existence on my phone or PC, because it is being done on the server end. (and I never check spam on webmail)

Could you please check the spam filtering configuration on my account. (although I see many users are having the same issue)

I have whitelisted my family, and gone into spam and selected those as not spam, but there are hundreds that are too aggressively being sent to spam, without my knowledge.

Can you check your TalkTalk Internet access for me now and let me know if it works? You can do this by trying to reload the site or application you were experiencing problems with or trying to search for something on the Internet.

Yes, I've had that too, and with some other test emails they've sent me for another issue I'm having.

The below shows how ridiculous the talktalk spam filtering is.

Whilst on a call to talktalk about renewing my contract, they sent me a new contract and another email and they both went into spam.

So it filters out its own company emails, going to a customer !!

So, 18 days with no real help from talktalk. Agents have ignored my recent tags, asking for an update. I rang support, went through the basics and told that it would be passed on to someone higher who would ring me. That was a week ago.

This is not a fault at my end, its talktalk spam filtering at the server and is affecting many users. @sabelo-TT @Mandisa-TT At least update us please.

Exactly. It affects all my family and others, but talktalk support seem to want to blame my phone, browser, OS, outlook etc

Hi,

Seems this is a common theme. I've just posted on another thread 'Legitimate emails sent to spam folder' because I have this same issue.

From what I gather, not many people use Webmail or the TalkTalk app, and most like myself rely on a mail client Outlook, Gmail, Thunderbird, etc.) to download their inboxes from TalkTalk. This has worked for us, for many year until Jan this year for us when the issue of non-Spam emails being randomly assigned to the Spam folders of our TalkTalk mailboxes. As the Spam folders are not tracked by down stream mail clients, these emails are transparent unless you start logging into your TalkTalk mail account on a regular basis to de-Spam the folders (I'm well and truly tired of having to do this).

At the end of the day, this Spam 'management' that has been imposed is, as the title of this thread states, is not just over aggressive, it is random in nature, and I think it is something we'd all rather was just switched off.

Regards,

@sabelo-TT @Mandisa-TT

I am still waiting for some support on this.

I am not alone, others are having the same problem.

My son just copied himself into a sent email and his copy went straight to spam.

If you cant resolve it, is there any way to turn off the spam filtering completely at your end, so i can sort through them in my email client (although this is a last resort )

You can set up rules with talktalk webmail, but the spam is filtered before it gets there. Hence I can not get all spam to divert to the inbox

Hi, @zippy1148

Thanks for the reply.

Can you please tell, how you 'divert to send everything that goes to spam, into my inbox'? Do you use (your version of) Outlook, or something else?

As I said above, I can't do any email filtering in my Outlook.

Edit: Or, do you mean, you can't do that in your Outlook. It's only what you would like to do, via other means?

The emails never get to my Outlook account, they are being filtered out by talktalk at the server. I have tried setting filters on the TalkTalk webmail, but its not working because they go straight to spam. I need a divert to send everything that goes to spam, into my inbox. Then at least U can decide what is spam

The staff here are usually asking inappropriate questions, in order to solve this.

Please tell the OP and the rest of us what has been found so far.

Legitimate emails are being put in the Spam folder and real Spam are put in the Inbox.

What is to be done?

@zippy1148

In the email client I have, Outlook (but 'new Outlook for Windows') there is no capability for any email filters.

The version was hailed by Microsoft as the very latest and the best.

You must have a different version.

Hi, @zippy1148

If emails are in the Spam folder, they do not get auto-deleted. They remain.

I have old spam emails in my Spam folder, since November 2024.

I know TalkTalk webmail says 'Items in this folder will be automatically deleted after 30 days'.

That's false. Ignore it.

I have inly used 185mb of 10GB.

If you read the thread below, it appears random with only some emails from myself, my family and some businesses going into spam at the server . It also effects my wifes account, although to a lesser degree. I am convinced it is your spam filtering. I often send emails to myself and my wife, and do not want any if them going to spam. I use various mail programs on different devices and so if I know an email is missing, have to log into your webmail to look for it. This is a nuisance and thats only if I know one is missing. Some emails I never knew went to spam, and are then later auto deleted

@zippy1148, how's the space on your inbox. Should this be full, emails will automatically go to spam folder.
