Has something changed in the reply-to-an-email format?

Now when I click on "reply", I get a template with the first two lines as normal, viz, From (followed by my email address) and To (where I put the recipient's email address), but before I get to the Subject (where the email body goes), there is an extra line saying Reply To.  This never used to be there!! And the Reply To line is prefilled with an erroneous email address. The erroneous address is like my backup address but misspelled!!!

How do I get rid of that line?

I've looked in "settings" but can'tfindanything relevant. Thanks for any help you can give.

@angelique-TT @Mandisa-TT @sabelo-TT are you able to investigate this rogue email address, and get it purged from his email account please, now that @tiscalijohn1 has added it to the private notes field of his profile?

Thank you.

I didn't have time to do a full scan yesterday but I did this afternoon using Bitdefender and there were no unresolved issues.

I've added my misspelled "alternative email address" to my private notes. So if any high authority could investigate its origin or validity, please do. Thanks.

I will try to unload email from my ipad and reinstall after my upcoming short holiday.

Hi, @tiscalijohn1

If you can't amend the settings in your Ipad or Iphone, I would remove the TalkTalk email account from the apps in them, as @fr8ys suggests, and then reintroduce the email account fresh.

The correct server settings for your TalkTalk email address are:

Incoming email server --> mail.talktalk.net  Port 993
Outgoing email server --> smtp.talktalk.net Port 587

There aren't any primary or secondary servers.

You say ' my Firefox default is to clear those items on your picture every time I switch the PC off'

Please, just ignore that for now

Please go through the procedure, as I show clearly above.

Ensure that the top line is 'Everything'

You also didn't mention whether you scanned your computer.

Please perform a full scan using Microsoft Anti-virus.

Bill

On the iPad front, I'd suggest removing the account and then readd it using the correct settings here. I believe they are all now the same for emails using the TalkTalk domain which includes tiscali.

Just in case though, take note of all existing settings before deleting your account.

As I previously mentioned, put the misspelt email address in your private notes field of your profile and hopefully @angelique-TT , @Mandisa-TT  or @sabelo-TT  will be able to ask the back room guys to check if this is a live email address and get it deleted or at least purged from your account so that it will no longer appear.

Yes, my Firefox default is to clear those items on your picture every time I switch the PC off. But I still have that "Reply To" line with my misspelled name (or misspelled alternative email address if I hover the mouse over it) when I click on Compose Email, or reply to an existing one. But I suppose in the scheme of things, having to delete both that name and then the line (by clicking on RE) is a small issue every single time I write an email on my PC now. There are still no Contacts when I click on the icon at the end of the "To" line, even though on the TalkTalk main page, if I click on the three lines on the main banner, between TalkTalk and the envelope, there they all are, listed alphabetically!

As far as sending an email from my ipad is concerned, if I go to Settings, >Mail>Account, the outgoing mail server is listed as smtp.tiscali.co.uk. If I click the arrow, the next page says, PRIMARY SERVER smtp.tiscali.co.uk  On. Below it says OTHER SMTP SERVERS smtp.talktalk.net    On.

I have never ever altered these and have never explored this page before! I don't know if the phishing attempt a few weeks ago altered these from what they may have been before or if it was a secret TalkTalk move. It appears I can't just type in "talktalk" instead of "tiscali" as there is no Edit option. In the small print, it says that if Mail is unsuccessful using the primary server, it will try the other SMTP server in succession. Not being able to send emails from my ipad IS definitely not acceptable, so I need to get this problem fixed. I now have an Outbox in my Mail (which I never had before, by the way) containing all the emails I've tried to send since the phishing event.

So, folks, what should I try next?

Hi. @tiscalijohn1

About,

'the error message "Cannot Send Mail, the username or password for smtp.tiscali.co.uk is incorrect" '

Yes, that is incorrect

The current outgoing TalkTalk email server is: smtp.talktalk.net on port 587. That's applies to any talktalk email address, even much older legacy addresses.

I am sorry if I was heavy with you in a previous  message.

I have reread the thread, and I am thinking that by 'template' you just meant the ordinary 'Compose' window (which has a bit of a change in it now), rather than a TalkTalk webmail Template, created by a user.

If that's so, I am very very sorry.

And if that's so, your PC must be really hacked.

As someone has suggested above, I would clear cache. But cache is more than 1 thing.

To clear cache:

Click Settings --> Click 'Privacy & Security' --> Scroll Down --> Find 'Clear Data' --> Click 'Clear Data'
I would clear as follows:
Pict

abcabc

You don't have to clear all cookies. Just TalkTalk cookies
To clear TalkTalk cookies: Click 'Manage Data', just under 'Clear Data' --> Find TalkTalk cookies --> And delete all TalkTalk cookies

I would also run a full anti-virus scan with Microsoft Anti-virus.

Hi, @tiscalijohn1

One creates a new template in TalkTalk webmal as follows:
Click the Cogwheel --> Click 'All settings' --> Scroll down until you see 'Templates' --> Click Templates -->
Click 'Add new template' --> Enter a name for the new Template --> Enter the text and maybe pictures in the body of the template --> Click Save --> Exit Mail Settings

There is nothing in the template creation process, to specify any headers like 'From' or 'Reply-To'. It defaults to From 'your own email address', when you use the template. And without the Reply-To header.
So I am not sure what you are trying say.

Besides, you posted copy of a new 'Compose', not a copy of your template.
It would be useful to see the template.

Edit: And how did you create a template, which includes a From email address and a Reply-To email address?

Edit 2: Also, if you do an ordinary 'Compose', not using a template,  the 'Compose' will never have a Reply-To email address slot, with or without an actual email address. If it does, something is drastically wrong.

Edit3: If it were possible to set TalkTalk webmail to include a Reply-To email address slot, on opening a new 'Compose', there would be a setting in    Mail ---> 'Compose & Reply'. There isn't such a setting.

I understand @tiscalijohn1 can you clear your cache and try again to send the email to yourself and let me know if you are able or still having an issue.

As of this afternoon, I cannot send emails either to myself either on my tiscali address or my other non-TalkTalk address. I am receiving emails OK. This time last week, I could do both.

Yes, the problem still exists. I'll try to upload a screenshot of the template I am talking about (with the From and Reply To emails crossed out) as my description seems not to be fully understood! Furthermore, although I still have my TalkTalk contacts (I can see them if I click on a link in the main page), if I click on the icon of a man with a square around it on the extreme right side of To or Reply To lines in this template, the address book comes up empty.

All the above relates to me using a desktop PC. I don't know if it's relevant but if I try to send a tiscali email to myself on either ipad or iphone, I get the error message "Cannot Send Mail, the username or password for smtp.tiscali.co.uk is incorrect". I am receiving emails into my inbox OK on these devices, though.

Can you get into your email management? If so does this misspellt email appear there? Can you delete it?

I suggest you put this email address in your private notes so staff can check to see if its a valid email address (if it's a TalkTalk one).

If it's not a TalkTalk one, its probably been set up to confuse and hope you would. not notice so the scammers can harvest even more addresses and see if any financial mails come through.

If this is the case then you are doing right by deleting it each time. If you cant find anywhere in settings that this appears, then I think it !may take an intervention from TalkTalk staff or backroom staff to remove this from your account settings.

@angelique-TT is not back until Monday now, and hopefully can look into this and get it cleared for you.
