surge in emails marked as spam by talktalk

hi there

i have a lineone account and pay for using this mailbox - i don't have talktalk broadband, telephony or tv services, etc.

A handful of observations / questions regarding mailbox level spam detection

(1) having gone from never getting mailed marked as spam by talktalk (i have a lineone mailbox), i recently discovered (just a few days ago) multiple emails in the spam folder.

This folder is the one visible when logged into my webmail i.e. not a local client spam folder but mailbox level

These emails go back to mid december 2024 i.e. it looks like something changed in terms of spam detection during December.

The majority too are legitimate

Could staff / admins advise what has happened?

NOTE: I currently use outlook 2021 as my local client, which of course has local spam filters - i'm not referring to them.

(2) despite searching through my webmail settings, i couldn't find a single option regarding this mailbox level spam filter.

I was hoping to relax how stringently it filters (to lessen the false positives) or turn off the filtering altogether. Are either of these possible?

(3) despite marking legitimate emails as not spam, one sender's messages are still being flagged as false positive. Is there a way to mark them as a safe sender?

(4) tbh i was expecting marking items as not spam to become safe senders automatically, so what exactly does the "not spam" command do?

Does it simply move the email(s) in question to one's Inbox?

Does it train the spam filter in any way?

Regards,

Gary

OpenXchange provide the email platform. Recently, we switched from Cloudmark to OX for antivirus and antispam. I no longer have any tools to view the logs of sent/received mails so can't check for deferred or rejected mail. I'm not sure how we get something allowed again these days. I've asked one of my colleagues in the email team for assistance. I'll let you know once I hear back.

hey Ady

still here / still suffering the joys of community support

thanks for responding

OX migration?
- is this something new / happened recently?
- is this to do with stuff i've seen on the community pages about increased spam over the xmas period?

Any info on how users can manage our mailbox spam behaviour would be appreciated e.g. sensitivity, whitelisting/blacklisting, can we train our spam detection etc

best wishes

Gary

Hi gazzawazza, I'm still waiting for feedback from the OX migration project manager. The person in charge of the move to OX managing more of our email function. I'm hoping to discover if the process behind not spam has changed.

As far as I can tell, this is very newish software.

After searching, I have not found any documentation, particularly in order to use the email filtering capability, within the Talktalk Webmail software.

Currently, it seems you might have to do your own experimentation.

Does 'Not Span' simply move the email(s) in question to one's Inbox?

Yes. That's what it does. Whether it will also do similar automatic moves in the future, from Spam to Inbox, no one knows. Because there is no documentation.
