I have been experimenting with an alternative router so as to enable setting up a mesh network but that hasn't worked out so I have completely reinstated my TalkTalk WiFi hub and, yesterday all was well, with a download sync speed of over 45K. That's normal and I'm ok with it. This morning, however, I'm down to 37.8K, the lowest it has been for a very long time. Test says everything is ok but, clearly, it isn't. An overnight drop of over 15% suggests a fault outside.

Hi philipm,
I don't know to be honest, as you say it should be VDSL, you could try changing it if you are still experiencing problems

One last question, sorry. Attached screen shot shows current situation with TP-Link router. Why is the link type set to ADSL when, as I understand it, FTTC uses VDSL? Just wondered if I should change it.
Thanks

Hi philipm
Thank you. You too 🙂

OK. I'll do that shortly and then leave it over the weekend. I'll have to hang on a little as I currently have two people working from home and they'll get the right ache if I keep kicking them off!!!!
Thanks for your help so far. We'll see what next week brings.
Have a good weekend.

Speeds can vary between different routers. It would be worth leaving the TP - Link connected now just to see if DLM changes the speed with this router connected.
We can check in again with you on Monday to see how you are getting on.

Well, I'd like to pursue the TP-Link router and mesh network. Can you think of any reason why the TP wouldn't ultimately sync around the same speed as your WiFi hub?
on 29-11-2024 10:22 AM
Hi @philipm
Have you finished testing different set ups? Once the connection is stable again then DLM should start to increase the speed.
on 29-11-2024 10:20 AM
Yes. As I said earlier, I have been experimenting with a TP-Link router, in order to set up a mesh network but it always seemed to sync about 10% slower than the WiFi Hub. So, it has involved me connecting and reconnecting multiple times.. I did ask if that would have triggered an algorithm to lower the speeds in order to get perceived stability.

Hi @philipm
Thank you. The connection looks really unstable, have you been rebooting the router or is the connection dropping?
The drops in connection will affect the sync speed.

Hi.
Its a BT Openreach Mk 4 so I've taken the front off it and connected directly. As you can see from the screenshot, the sync speed is now worse than ever.

Hi @philipm
Thanks for your reply.
Could you post a photo of your master socket on this thread, so I can check if you have a test socket?
on 29-11-2024 08:42 AM
Hi, Michelle.
No noise on the voice line and I can't see a test socket. I restarted the router after I posted and I'm nor syncing at 40.4, so it's gone up but not to what it should be.
It did occur to me, actually, that as I've been doing a bit of messing about, connecting and disconnecting, over the last few days that, perhaps, some algorithm has decided I have an issue and is deliberately throttling the sync speed to try and get back "stability". Could that be the case?

Hi philip,
I'm sorry to hear this. I've run a test on the line now which hasn't detected a fault. Is there any noise on your voice service? Does your main socket also have a test socket please?
Thanks
Michelle
