Can't connect to 5Ghz wireless

I updated to Full Fibre 64 on monday and following installation had a few issues. the first was the telephone wasn't working so the support line had me hard reset the router (Sagecomm Fast5464). That fixed the phone issue but reset my network to use subnet 192.168.1.x rather than 192.168.0.x. Having spent time changing it back I got to the position where bothe 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz were accessible but performance not so great. Spent a couple of hours on the phone with customer support to not much progress. Today I disabled the wifi extender and I got to the point that performance was OK (70Mbits on 5Ghz 30Mbits on 2.4Ghz).

Suddenly this afternoon the modem stopped advertising the 5Ghz SSID (my main SSID that most devices are attached to) but still advertises 2.4Ghz SSID. After multiple power restarts I'm at the point where the 5Ghz SSID is advertised but cannot be joined.

I'm at a loss what to try next, short of a hard reset again

Any suggestions?

You should still get a good signal from it though.

correction, they aren't in the same room, the extender is on the landing immediately outside the room, 3.5m away but in line of sight through an open door.

Hi stagecoach,

We can order wifi extenders to test with, would you like us to arrange this?

No, they are not designed to work across two ring mains, but that won't account for the WiFi signal going very low level, considering it is in the same room upstairs. TalkTalk should come on here later this afternoon or tomorrow & offer you another kit.

Hi Keith, Thanks for this.

I just connected to the ethernet port under the antennae and disabled wireless on my laptop. A speedtest gives me 37Mbps down and 19.7Mbps up so there is a performance loss with being on 2 rings.

The problem is that the WiFi signals from the extender are of a very low level, despite them being in the same room. There is a bug that can cause this, although for the life of me, I cannot find where I put the details of it. I also do not have these anymore so cannot do any work to replicate it. The Ethernet port under the antennae will most likely still be OK.

I think the first thing is to get this extender set replaced, just in case it is faulty. I will ask TalkTalk to do this for you.

No, the router and network connector are on the downstairs ring and the extender is on the upstairs ring. Both are plugged into wall sockets and no extension leads in either case. I recognise that this is not ideal scenario.

Are both units on the same electrical ring main circuit & are either powered via extension leads, surge suppressor strips etc?

Hi @stagecoach

Thanks for the screenshots. The D-Link product, is that the TalkTalk WiFi extender kit (D-Link DHP-W610AV) with the network connector by the router connected to the WiFi extender over your mains electricity?

Hi @stagecoach

I will PM you a link for a guide of mine on Wi-Fi interference & initially look at the section called "Are you suffering from interference – prove it first". This section includes full details of Wi-Fi analysers that I recommend for Windows, Windows phone, Android and Apple operating systems. However, I have no way of testing the Apple product. Do not worry about interpreting the results, I will do that for you.

Please post the screenshots to me in a PM (to protect your privacy), which I have requested in my guide. No photos please they can be difficult to read as text can get out of focus when zoomed in, from the analyser you are using (also in my attached guide). Please ensure that the analyser window is maximised (if Windows) before taking the screenshots & upload them via the "Insert Photos" button (in a mobile browser it's the picture icon) on the post editor's toolbar with the Size parameter set to Large. If they are too small, I will not be able to read them & although I can enlarge them, this puts the text out of focus.

Hi Debbie,

I think all devices are connected  except for a pair of echo dots in my office and I'll work on them later when I come back. I believe that is a channel issue.

Thanks

Hi Dennis

Thanks for your reply.

Are all devices connecting ok upstairs now?

Thanks @Debbie-TalkTalk .

Wifi is stable on both 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz and performance is very good for the devices downstairs.

I battled over the weekend with devices upstairs , I moved a sonos box about a metre in my office and it came to life (on 5Ghz) so I suspect interference there.

Thanks for everyone's help so far

Dennis

Replacement router has arrived, thank you.

recabled exactly as the old one and powered on. Attached laptop directly to the router and logged in, changed the 2.4Ghz SSID to <mySSID>24 and the 5Ghz to <my SSID>. Saved the config and the router rebooted for some reason.

Anyway once up I perform@Keithed speedtest by OOKLA and got 75.16 down and 16.36 up ( expected higher than this for up but I can come back to this later. This was still directly connected to router.

At the moment wifi extender not connected but pass thru powerline is.

All my devices are connected to <mySSID> so 5Ghz is publishing availability . my 2.4 GHz device (printer) not yet connecting but I'll work on that.

Selected 5GhZ channel not visible to Roku so I reset 5Ghz channel to 40 and Roku connects OK

Disconnected laptop from router and connected to <my SSID>. At my usual place of rest (lounge) I ran Speedtest and got 75.87 down 19.25 up.

Moved to my office upstairs and 5Ghz drops but connected OK to 2.4 and got 52 down 18 up. However my fixed computer not 30cm away only gets 26.7 down 17 up.....

Anyway so far so good.

Can I please have wifi optimisation turned off and @KeithFrench can I get help in optimising my setup please - I believe you have some document that you only send out when asked(?)

Thanks for everyone's help so far

Dennis
