I am a 76 year old Chartered Engineer
I have a study with three computers XP, Win 7, and Win 11. I have a wireless printer.
The lady of the house uses her XP machine for specialized software. She streams the odd TV program.
I have a TP-Link Archer VR2800 router. It manages to get wifi signal to the whole house.
CityFibre have a cable up the road at the front of house and left a stub.
All I have asked is that that the ONT is placed in my study. This will involve running about 20 m of fibre from the wall box under the lounge floor to the study. Access is quite easy.
WHY WILL talktalk NOT talk to me and confirm . . . . ????

The CityFibre network is Full Fibre only. Full fibre means a fibre optic connection from the City Fibre network direct to your home. There is NO MODEM involved in Full Fibre installations. You will NOT receive any MODEM.
The incoming fibre optic cable terminates in the indoor Optical Network Termination box that's closely similar in width to a standard telephone wall socket box.

I am told by TalkTalk that it is is "full fibre" . . . .
I am even more confused as to what is on offer . . . .
Will I get a modem or not ?
Technical knowledge of those people answering the phone seems to be somewhat limited . . .
and as for the web sites . . . . totally confusing with no straight answers

Hi Richard
You may be confusing Fibre 150 and Fibre 250 that are Gfast services delivered over metallic line to the house. These services do use a Gfast modem connected to the telephone line via a Master telephone socket with a Gfast service faceplate.
However, Full Fibre 150, 500 and 900 packages terminate the optical fibre cable to the home in a Customer Service Point or Customer Splice Point on an external house wall and, internally, via an Optical Network Termination or ONT.

Are you saying that the ONT converts the optical signal to an ethernet one ?
Noted that the TalkTalk installation video shows two connections - the ONT and the Modem .....

There is no modem just the Optical Network Termination (ONT) box that, on its own, is about the size of a standard telephone socket.
Your existing router has a 1Gbps WAN port socket that connects via Ethernet cable (suitable for 1Gbps networking) direct to the ONT.
The optical fibre cable that the network installer will connect to an outside CSP has to have an optical fibre cable connected to the ONT. This optical fibre cable remains part of the network operator's equipment and they'll want to retain access to that cable and the ONT. So, it's extremely unlikely that the network installer will agree to installing their network cable under floorboards or in loft spaces because of lack of access. They'll usually agree to run a modest length (usually up to 20 metres) of optical cable from the CSP around the outside of the house to an alternate hole in the wall to an ONT.
But as I indicated, it's not necessary to consider that as an option because you can install your own Ethernet cable under the floorboards to connect router to ONT.
Your router runs blazing fast wi-fi but if you're happy with a slow speed ADSL connection that doesn't do any justice to the money you spent on the router then for now you could opt to keep the conventional landline broadband service. At some time though the landline services will get withdrawn at your telephone exchange and you'll be asked to go with a fibre optic connection to the home.

Where does the fibre cable modem get fitted ?
My router is a TP-Link Archer VR2800 - which includes an adsl modem which will port become redundant.
I can arrange for an ethernet cable to be run thru, but the lady of the house does NOT want the wall cluttered up with a ONT and a modem !
In fact I am happy with my 5k landline !

Hi Richard
Looks like you have a router on your desk so I can understand why you are asking about the ONT being fitted in the study. However, it's not necessary so I'll explain. The ONT can be fitted on the internal house wall directly opposite where the network installer, CityFibre or Openreach for example, will position the external customer splice point or customer service point (CSP). The fibre optic cable goes through the wall from the CSP to the ONT.
Now the next bit is what you can do. Run your 20 metres of underfloor Ethernet cable, Cat 5e or better specification, from the ONT to your router's WAN port or Internet port however that's described. You're now connected to Full Fibre. Enjoy.
My installation is very similar to yours. I have the ONT fitted back to back to the CSP. The Ethernet cable is underfloor. In my case I chose Cat7 specification for future proofing reasons (Ignore the troll that decries Cat7). I have fitted skirting board level brushed wall plates to give underfloor access and so I have a 15 metre run of Ethernet cable to the eero 6 router that's located fairly centrally to the house.
NB TalkTalk do not install either fibre optic cables or Ethernet cables in the home which is why TalkTalk leave it to the network installer to carry out all installation services.
