What is EERO?

As part of my new fibre connection, or of the random boxes I've received appread to be called "EERO". There is not explanation as to what it is or what it's for. The instructions say:

Step 1: download the app.

No. No. No. No. are you completely insane? Tell me what it is and what it does, then I'll decide IF I want to plug it in to my network or download any app.

NB, again, I am OBLIGED to put a "label" on my post. EEPRO is not one of the options. What should I do? this is soooo random. Is this damn thing even from TalkTalk?

Don't think so, Thanks.  Although, I haven't had a chance to tackle the TV box yet.

Ah, OK, cool. So no further action is required then?

Yes. I had meant to say: "I doubt that it's free."

I have done it, with success (post 55) the GUI seems to now be faster, and (post 57) that I'm using it presently.

Sorry, I am not really sure what your point is here? As previously advised, you can connect the DVA to an ethernet port on your current router and it will work. Have you yet to do that? Just send the eero back and it can be reused, or recycled.

@ferguson I understand that I wouldn't pay extra for "standard" supplied equipment. I pay extra to have a "telephone". I suspect I am effectively renting the VoIP hardware. I seriously doubt that the completely redundant EERO box, which was deceptively pushed on me, was free. Nothing's "free".

No, @kdmcm the WiFi Hub 2 (5464) natively supports digital voice and you just connect a standard landline phone to it. In other words it has the circuitry of the Grandstrean Digital Voice Adapter built into it. That is not the case with your 5364 or Eero.

Apology accepted.

Yes the merging etc of topics had nothing to do with me, as I am not capable of performing such a feat!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this thread.

I hope you get your issues sorted soon.

@KeithFrench You did say in post 12 that it natively supports "DV." At the time, that was another random acronym to me.

I now understand you probably meant that it natively supports Analog Voice.

Hi @kdmcm

I answered that question way back in post #12.

Yes, the 5464 has an extra port which acts as a telephone adapter, apologies if this wasn't clear before. You don't pay anything for TalkTalk standard supplied equipment, it is provided as part of the service.

@ferguson "faster" was a reference to the fact that the GUI on the Sagemcom appears to be faster now than it was when I was using it as a MODEM. (One of the original complaints.) I would have asked the question as a separate thread, but when I post separate threads on separate subjects, some of the community stars object, with claims that I'm asking the same thing multiple times.

I wonder if it's because the resource is no longer tied up with the MODEM functionality, since that is being handled by the ONT. (I'm only guessing.)

No, I'm really quite glad the EERO didn't work out because with a two port router, one port tied up by the ONT and one tied up by the Analog Telephone Adapter, there was nowhere to plug in my desktop PC. Unfortunately, I hadn't grasped this when I was mis-sold the product, so now I'm probably paying for its rental. The Sagem also has IPv6 routing: I'm using it presently.

Ref your first response that the. Does the 5464 have an extra port for the voice adapter, or does it have the Analog Telephone Adapter built-in? If the latter, that would have been a much more suitable product than the EERO with an external Analog Telephone Adapter.

None, other than an extra port for the voice adapter. The innards are essentially the same.

WiFi 6. And you can set up a mesh with any router. But the question seems moot as you can't actually use an eero?

I don't understand your final question:  faster than what?

What advantage would the Sagem 5464 offer over the Sagem 5364?

What advantage would the EERO give over the Sagem 5364? (Other than mesh?)

Thanks.

NB ... the GUI on the Sagem seems to be faster. I don't understand how this can be. Anybody got any insight, please?

Hi kdmcm,

The service should work fine with your existing router, it won't restrict the speed. The Sagemcom is a modem router but the modem function is redundant when connected to the ONT so it will just act as a router as would the eero

The DVA that @Chris-TalkTalk  said that you could use in the Grandstream DVA that you were supplied.

@KeithFrench I have acknowledged the assistance. I am in the process of trying to rebuild bridges which may have become singed.

@Chris-TalkTalk What's a DVA? Is that an ONT? AKA MODEM?

I had been led to believe by TalkTalk that the EERO was the new MODEM/router. In fact, when the Opereach chap said he needed to install an ONT, the picture became very clear in my head. I know the ONT to be the MODEM (modulating optical into digital); what I do with the ethernet beyond that is up to me. In fact TalkTalk have mis-sold me a EERO "gateway" which I don't think serves any purpose on my network, since I don't have any mesh devices.

Keith had suggested an alternative router. As an interim measure, then, I have connected the ONT to the WAN port of my existing router, and that works. Now, what are the downsides of this? Will it be able to handle the newly available fibres speeds?

Chris has helped me to firm up in my own mind that the DVA is also a MODEM (modulating audio into digital) which I already knew, but was starting to doubt. I am also satisfied that I can simply connect the DVA to the existing router.

I hope you understand the confusion and how we got here. As previously stated, I remain grateful to the community. It's is unfortunate that some are branded as "Staff" as they would get the brunt of the customer irk as the customer falsely assumes they are TalkTalk staff. I apologise again for my lack of comprehension, but I hope the route by which I got here is obvious.

Thank you all. My search for a TalkTalk member of staff to shout at ... continues.

So, basically:

- will the present router (which I has assumed was only for ADSL+2) be able to handle the new fibre speeds? I wanted a better router anyway, since the GUI on the 5364 is painfully slow, mDNA is flaky, and I don't think it copes well with 30 IoT devices on DHCP.

- If I connect the DVA to the existing router (the configuration of the DVA mentions the EERO app, so I'm slightly concerned) will it "work"? How does it "know" my phone number, for example?

Again, thanks and apologies all round.

Hi kdmcm,

If you already have a sagemcom router you should be able to continue using this with the DVA

No Community Star works for TalkTalk or is responsible for what you have ordered @kdmcm. If you would care to look at my post #41, I have asked TalkTalk to consider giving you a 5464 in place of the eero. Surely that is trying to help you, as have all of the other Community Stars who have contributed to your thread. So instead of having a go at us, how about you limit your posts just to TalkTalk in future?

Hey, I appreciate your frustration. I confess to having got somewhat exasperated at your constant posting, so please forgive me for that. The eero really is "the latest and greatest" router which TalkTalk offer, it is a shame that you only realised you wouldn't be able to use it without the app until late in the day. I do hope the support team manage to find a solution for you.

And, for anyone who is familiar with the thread, I have a partial solution:

- I am not entitled to the latest and greatest router, which I was sold after having spoken AT GREAT LENGTH to your marketeer, during a conversation which I was assured was recorded (PLEASE GOD, LET IT HAVE BEEN RECORDED).

- I am lumbered with TalkTalk again, after trying my hardest to no longer be a problem to you all.

The record shows that I have recognised kindness, apologised for my one error. Please, when a sentence starts "respectfully" that is what I mean.

I completely recognise that there is nothing the community can do to fix the flawed TalkTalk business model. Again, with my apologies, you folk are unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time. "Kudos-seeking may have been uncalled for. I am exceedingly angry. The exchanges sometimes read like a competition to see who can pee the furthest up the the wall.

I appreciate your efforts to protect the poor TalkTalk corporate giant from me , the meagre, meaningless customer, but now that I have FINALLY got the attention of one of them, with the greatest of respect and humility, it's probably best if you leave me to tackle them. You probably don't want to be involved in what happens next. The last time I needed to speak to someone who works for TalkTalk without sitting on the phone for an hour, the only way to get their attention was to cancel my direct debit.
