Guaranteed speed

Just thought it might be useful to get an official comment from staff about this.

My latest contract renewal summary states this:

"You can look forward to an estimated download speed between 31.5 Mbps and 35.0 Mbps with a minimum guaranteed download speed of 28.3 Mbps and upload speed of 5.8 Mbps"

I always thought only download speed had a guaranteed minimum. Is there now also a guaranteed minimum upload speed as that statement suggests or is it just a poorly worded sentence and that is simply an estimated achievable upload speed?

I agree it could be better phrased. But grammatically speaking, your interpretation of a "minimum guaranteed download speed of x" followed by an "upload speed of y" means that you are inferring the latter is qualified by the preposition to the former, which is not necessarily the case.

@Arne-TalkTalk ,

Thanks for your response and clarification but I'm not sure if you have fully understood the point. TalkTalk really need to think about sorting out their grammar in order that information they supply properly conveys the meaning they intended. That statement in my contract summary implies that the quoted upload speed is a guaranteed minimum. If it is in fact just an estimated speed, then the wording of such statements needs to be altered to make that clear.

Hi AllyM

We cant guarantee minimum upload speeds, but we have to give you an indication of what to expect.

Hope that answers your question.
