Did talk talk have problems with direct debit accounts as I rang and was told it was being fixed and it would take my payment then.

Yes there is a system issue at our end with the direct debits for your particular bill cycle, we would recommend making a one off payment this time.

There was an issue on 17th May.
Staff will confirm whether or not you need to make a one-off card payment or leave things to the DD system. Wait for their instructions during the week, @Kirtl999.
