Fibre Speed Boost

Message 148 of 148

Good afternoon,

I have purchased the Fibre Speed Boost (about three weeks ago), but I haven't seen any improvement in my download speed.

Speed tests consistently return download speeds of around 38mbps, which is what I was getting prior to the boost being added, although I believe I was told I could get up to 72mbps (I do understand that this is a maximum figure and unlikely to be achieved).

Is there anything that can be done to see if I can achieve higher speeds than 38mbps, as if it is not possible, then the boost isn't worth keeping.

Many thanks

Hi Chris,

I had a quick check on download speed using a laptop plugged directly into the router, with nothing else attached to the router, no Wi Fi adaptor, no Powerlines, and the download speed still only reached 45mbps!!

Not sure where to go from here!!

Hi Michelle,

I don't have anything else at the moment unfortunately.

When my son's fiancee comes over she brings a laptop, but not expecting that to be until after the weekend.

I have tried switching off all powerlines apart from the one going into the PC, and download speed is 43mbps so not much difference.

I'm quite happy to wait until I get access to the laptop, then I will run it and come back to you.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for letting for me know. Do you have any other device that you could test wired, for example a laptop, with the powerline adapter removed just to rule this out?

Thanks

Hi Michelle,

I am back using the Hub I had before, as the tests on the replacement router showed no improvement.

I do have Powerline's attached as my PC is in a different room to the router, but this is the same setup I had before when I was getting the downloads speeds I was expecting.

Do you want me to disconnect all other things using powerlines and try again?

Hi Larry,

Thank you. Just before I pass this over could you confirm if you're still using the replacement router and if you also ran the pings and traces when connected wired with no powerline adapters/switches connected as the first pings still look high?

Thanks

Hi Michelle,

I just sent a reply to this with the Ping and Trace results, but I have received a message saying that it has been identified as SPAM.

Are you able to sort this for me please?

Kind regards

Hi Larry,

Thanks for trying this again. I've included the Help Article below.

Run a Ping or Traceroute

Hi Michelle,

I have just had the router off for 30 mins, and run a retest, and at the moment it is running slower at 29mbps.

There is no noise on the phone line.

Can you send me the links again for the ping and trace route and I will give that a try.

Hi Larry,

I'm sorry to hear this. Is this still a wired speed test? I've re-read through your thread and I can see that you've tried 2 different routers and also ran wired speed tests with 2 different devices, however the throughput speeds are still low.

I can see that you have previously tried switching the router off for a full 30 minutes and then retested the speed. It may be worth trying this again just to see how the throughput speeds compare now.

Is everything ok with the voice service with no noise on the line? If there is still no improvement then could you run another wired ping and trace route and we can ask our Network Team to take a look.

Thanks

Hi Michelle,

Just an update on this.

Unfortunately I wasn't selected for the router trial, so I can't do any tests on that.

I have just run a status check on my account and it says that speed to my router is 74mbps, but when I carry out a speed check, my result is 44 mbps, so I'm just wondering if there is anything else you can suggest?

Ok thanks for the update and please let us know how the connection compares with the alternative router.

Hi Debbie,

I have just run a speed test now and it came back at 45mbps, which is the fastest I have seen so far.

I recently signed up to a new router trial, which I believe is starting at the end of January.

Maybe it would be wise to see what comes of that before we proceed any further?

Hi Larry

I think it may be worth arranging a TalkTalk engineer visit so they can complete some testing.

Would you like me to arrange this?

Thanks

Hi,

I have tried disconnecting the internet cable from the PC, and running a speed checker on the Smart TV, which is connected by wire, and the speed came out lower on there than on the PC, so I am at a loss!!

Hi  larrywilkie,

Thanks for trying that. I can't see any obvious reason why your wired throughput speeds should be so low against sync speed. Do you have another device that your can run wired speed tests on just in case there's some issue with the PC

Hi Michelle,

It was wired on desktop PC and wireless on mobile, both were similar.

I’ve now plugged the Wi Fi Hub back in and speed has reverted to 39-40mbps

Hi Larry,

Thanks for trying this. Just to confirm, was this speed test also completed wired with no other applications running at the same time? Do you also get the same speed on 2 different devices?

Thanks
