I'm on FIbre 150, apparently, but having done lots of speed tests since the upgrade i seem to be getting a LOT of drops down to way below half of that. i read that it would take time to "bed in", but how long is that supposed to be?

Hi @KatKiller

Which make/model of router are you using?

Slow speed, intermittent dropouts, breaks in the signal or no signal on some or all devices or no internet access might be caused by Wi-Fi interference from other local networks, which can also lead to a permanent reduction in speed. No ISP can be responsible for your local environment, this is mainly a byproduct of the popularity of Wi-Fi.

Generally speaking, the 2.4GHz band suffers a lot more from interference than the much faster 5GHz band, but the 2.4GHz one can sometimes have a better range, but this all depends on your local area.

In other words, I offer a free, impartial analysis of your Wi-Fi network and will try to help you optimise your Wi-Fi connection. The next stage involves sending out a guide to help you get me some important diagnostic results so that I can analyse them for you and recommend changes to your router configuration to solve them.

I only send this out to people who request it.

Power cuts / surges can sometimes affect the router, @KatKiller.

Mine went funny after a surge when a lightning bolt hit nearby!

Let us know how you get on after the 30 minute switch off.

My own router needed replacing.

seems it's the wifi, just tested here on ether and it's fine. router hasn't moved etc, don't know why it should be so radically bad. we did have a power cut last night apparently but i don't see that that would be a cause of anything.

No, "bedding in" is a term generally used for mechanical components, not internet connections. While some internet providers might experience temporary speed fluctuations during the initial setup or connection process, this is not the same as bedding in. Fibre 150 typically delivers consistent speeds right from the start.

Elaboration:
  • No "Bedding In" Needed:
The idea of a "bedding in" period for internet connections is a misnomer. Fibre 150, like most modern internet technologies, should provide the advertised speeds from the moment it's activated.

  • Initial Fluctuations:
Some providers might mention temporary speed variations, especially in the first few days, but this is due to things like network setup or brief connection issues, not a "bedding in" process.

  • Consistent Performance:
Fibre 150 is designed to offer consistent and reliable speeds, allowing users to stream, game, and download without interruption.

  • Technical Considerations:
While the physical installation of fibre optic cable can sometimes have minor initial issues, the connection itself should be stable and reliable after the initial setup.
