All of a sudden everything I try and record is failing. any ideas why?

A full factory reset will erase and set up the hard drive, but that is the only option if the maintenance reset has failed.

Thanks. I tried the first thing and it didn't work. I'm guessing if I do the second thing, I'll lose everything I have saved already recorded? I'll try later in the week. Thanks for your help.

Try a Youview Maintenance Reset and see if this helps.
If recordings still fail after this then the only option is a full factory reset from the settings menu.
