Failing Router, below guaranteed speeds

For quite some time now (degradation over several months) we have been experiancing issues with our router more and more. This has ranged from extremely poor connection even though being in the same room as the router, to outright loosing connection leaving the room or being upstairs in the property. Initially we would have the rare disconnect or occosional spotty signal in the home once in a blue moon, but this is now a daily occurance in regards to poor connections along with speeds more often than not hitting single digits.

At the time of writing this speed tests are even showing we are getting well under half our guaranteed speed. Tests from Ookla, Fast, Google and BTWholesale all are within the range of LOW 30's with barely 1Mbps on uploads (Test's were taken from a wired connection with no other devices connected on a linux device with virtually no overheads) Latency is all over the place with it being recorded as bad as 1,800+ ms

Tests taken from https://support.talktalk.co.uk/speed-to-router show 62Mbps as speed to router (guaranteed speed: 52 Mbps). Speed to devices in the same room show as low as 4Mbps

Tests taken from https://support.talktalk.co.uk/diagnosis/run-speed-check show the error "Couldn’t connect to the server. Please try again." half the time

The issues have come from Apple, Android, Windows and Linux devices. Ranging from Phones, Laptops, Computers and a Steam Deck and they are all affected by these issues.

The area we live in is somewhat rural so there should be no interference from other devices nearby, otherwise we would have had these issues from the start.

A last minute test before posting this showed a download speed of 0.14Mbps Down and 0.10Mbps UP as once again our speeds simply tanked.

Using https://support.talktalk.co.uk/diagnosis and other support links have yielded absolutely no results at all.

Attached are various screenshots of speed tests and ping results taken at various times over different days via a wired device.

The service at this point is so speratic that its pretty much unusable at the best of times. Sometimes its as expected but more often than not its horrendous.

Morning @Todhunter

How are you getting on? Did the replacement router help?

Thanks

Hi @Todhunter

I'm sorry to hear this.

I've ordered a replacement router, so we can rule this out first.

Please allow 24-48hrs for this to arrive. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks

Debbie

OK, thanks for that. Do bear in mind that the support team won't be back online until Monday, but they will pick this up then as soon as they can.

Laptops are usually connected via Ethernet more often than not as we occasionally WFH. Desktop is permanently on Ethernet

(tests were all done via wired connection)

the main WiFi only devices are mobile, fire stick and occasionally the steam deck

Router is from 2019 and it is the Talk Talk Wi-Fi Hub

You have mostly been referring to wireless connection speeds as far as I can see, but you did mention one on a wired device also? It may indeed be that your router is failing, how old and what make/model is it?
