I have the Sagemcom hub and have normally been able to access it through Firefox (192.168.1.1). I made a change to the settings recently and now when I try, access just stalls and doesn't complete.
I saw a suggestion to try another browser, tried Microsoft Edge and got access with no trouble. Is Firefox alone with this problem?

When you say you made a change to the settings, do you mean the router settings or the settings in Firefox ?.
The router login page is likely to be http rather than https, and so the browser will consider that as insecure :
If you have changed some settings in Firefox were those settings anything to do with restricting access to insecure sites ?

Microsoft Edge et al will have the same problem.
So I suggest you clear your browser cache on FireFox...........
and do an update perhaps ???
