High latetency on VOIP calls

Working from home I am becoming increasingly frustrated when taking incoming calls. I only experience the delay on incoming calls, and are generally 2-3secs. This causes miscommunication between myself and the customer I am trying to talk with.

My partner also experiences small delays when gaming in the evenings too, although we are never gaming and taking calls at the same time. I have checked our router settings and I can see both his console and my work laptop are on 5ghz, and our current download speed is 17.5mbs on a wireless connection, which my laptop is. Would it be improved if I had a wired connection?

 

Is there a reason for the delay that can be fixed?

Unfortunately i have not, I was previously informed that it would not make a difference. I Do not have another wire long enough to make the connection at this time. I will try to get one and test this.
