Restricted mode turned on by your network administrator...

Restricted mode turned on by your network administrator to help hide potentially mature videos...This is the message I'm getting on YouTube which means I can't view some videos via my smart TV or smartphone when connected to TalkTalk Wi-Fi. This is causing problems because some videos are unavailable for me to watch. I'm not talking about "adult" videos, just clean music videos that don't contain nudity or bad language.

I've switched off Kidsafe on my TalkTalk account but that hasn't solved the problem. Why is restricted mode switched on? I didn't ask for it to be switched on and I'm not a child, I'm 49.

Please can someone tell me how to fix this. Thank you.

Hi

If this is resolved by switching off scam protection, then obviously this feature has something to do with affecting this.  Scam protection is usually there to disable things like remote connection software, so I was not aware that this was affecting the setting in youtube.

Hi, @WaRRioR1976

Alright, this how to do it while in your home network:

Go to you TalkTalk MyAccount at https://service.talktalk.co.uk/myaccount/dashboard

Click 'Manage your Wi-Fi security' (Homesafe)
Set Kid Safe                  to OFF
Set Scam Protection to OFF

Set Virus Alerts           to ON

Also when you are in YouTube,

Click on the vertical 3-dots, which are next to the sign-in button on the top right

On the dropdown menu,

Set Restricted Mode to OFF

I had the same problem and switched off scam protection as recommended by dsgsdg and Ican now view You Tube comments…..so this problem is definitely on Talk Talk Karl.

definitely sounds like a setting forced by TalkTalk needs them to change something no matter what their support says - as you say it works when connected to non TalkTalk network - connected to my 4g hotspot works as expected.

Hi,

That's exactly what I was thinking. Why are mundane comments like "I agree with what you've said" being blocked? I don't have young children so don't need safesearch filters. If I don't want to view adult material, I won't. Simple as that.

Hi Karl,

If my TV or phone is connected to Wi-Fi I can't switch off restricted mode. I can, however, switch restricted mode on or off when connected to 4g. Google search also has safesearch activated which I can't turn off when connected to Wi-Fi. Again, I can switch Google safesearch off when connected to 4g.

Yes, I previously had active a filter that blocked adult sites but the options in settings are different now.

If they are blocking something as mundane as youtube comments under 'Scam Protection' then it's fair to assume other stuff that should not be restricted is being restricted.

I'd rather just do without the filter than have random stuff that I don't want blocked being censored.

Hi dsgsdg,

I'm having the same problems with being unable to view comments while connected via Wi-Fi. As soon as I switch to 4g mobile data, I can view comments and all videos,  and restricted mode switches off.

I don't know if I'd feel comfortable switching off scam protection but I'll try it later and see if that solves the problem. Talktalk scam protection also has safesearch filters which blocks "adult" content. I'm not sure why the safesearch filters can't be activated separately.

Hi

On the Device or PC, whilst it is connected via your talktalk connection, click on your profile picture - usually top right corner of youtube page.   Down towards the bottom of the menu you should see restricted mode.  Try toggling it on and off.

Thanks

Karl.

Hi Karl,

I'm not sure it's a YouTube issue because if I'm using 4g mobile data, YouTube restricted mode is off. As soon as I switch to TalkTalk Wi-Fi,  YouTube restricted mode is on.

So I had the same issue. Talktalk started restricting youtube content (no comments at all visable) within the last few days.

I confirmed it was not a Google issue as Youtube worked as normal on mobile data with another provider.

The only option that was enable in talk talk settings was 'Scam Protection'. I disabled that and now youtube is working normally again.

Hi

This is a setting specific to youtube, and not a setting imposed by TalkTalk.

If you use Google you can search for the relevant answer.

Thanks

Karl.
